Email from my grandpa.
Since getting him a laptop last Christmas my grandfather always sends each of the grandkids a little inspiration every few days. Sometimes it’s just telling us how beautiful or talented we are, and sometimes it’s life advice that always seems to come when we need it the most. We never get to see him much, which burdens my heart a lot. I skype with him when given the chance, he’s back home in Osaka so the time difference always effects when we talk next. The email I got this morning I wanted to share with you. It came, as always, the time i needed it the most.
You need a lot of good’s in your life, hija.
You need a good book, good recipe for a good dinner party. A good party dress, a good coat, a good set of shoes. A good sense of self, a good moral compass, a good need to help others. If you ever have a son, you will tell them that they also need a good tie and good dinner jacket to take out a very nice young lady one day who i hope will be a good person. We all want great things in our lives, and some will achieve such greatness. To me, you’re great and will always be so. But remember my love, good isn’t settling. Good isn’t second best. Good is being humble with what you have and being acceptable to the flaws. Nothing is wrong with that. Nothing is ever wrong with being good.
Love you, Your dearest Grandpa.
