Suicide model Daul Kim wrote blog about pressure of catwalk
A highly-successful model who has been found dead in Paris used her blog to discuss depression, suicide and the pressures of her career.
The body of Daul Kim, 20, was discovered hanging in her flat on Thursday. The Paris prosecutor’s office said that the South Korean’s death was probably suicide.
Karl Lagerfeld, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane are among the top-tier designers who regularly used Kim to showcase their latest collections. The Seoul-born, 5ft 10inch model made her international catwalk debut at Paris Fashion week in 2007.
As well as travelling the world on modelling assignments, Kim kept a well-followed blog, cryptically entitled “I like to fork myself.”
A spokesman for Next, her agency in Paris, announced Kim’s death this morning, saying: “She was a top model and a great friend of us all.”
Kim started the weblog two years ago, just as her international career took off. As well as reporting the elation and frustration her life as a jobbing model, it includes some disturbing references to self-mutilation and suicide.
In April 2007 she posted a picture of herself holding a hammer next to her face and, after complaining of a rigorous travel schedule, wrote: “I am going to smash my face… My life as daul was so miserable and lonely. Please join my loneliness in another world. I love you all. Daul.” She then added. “KIDDING. Im fine. Just tired.”
